Crewmen - D or transit without visa - C

C & D Visas Transit Visas Individual C-1/D visas are issued to crew members of international airlines and to aliens required for the normal operation and service of a vessel. In determining who qualifies for the C-1/D visa, are taken into consideration the individual's responsibilities and activities on the ship. 

For example the most commonly issued C-1/D visas are to crew members of cruise liners and include, but are not limited to, beauticians, entertainers and lifeguards.  

The first step is to obtain from the employer a letter confirming employment by the airline or shipping company. The letter should be submitted together with various documents including a passport or other travel document valid for at least six months, one color passport type photograph; documentation showing your intent to return to your country of residence. a completed visa application form DS-156 as well as a completed supplemental visa application form DS-157.  

If the applicant wishes to r emain in the United States for a holiday after the period of employment, a required B-2 visa application is required. 

It should be noted that C-visas (Transit Without Visas) were largely restricted in 2004 for security reasons.  

For purposes of adjusting status to that of a permanent resident, C and D visa entries do not count as a legal admission; its as if one entered illegally.
